 من وحي مقال المخضرم باتريك كوكبرن في الاندبندنت: في وقت كان كل شيء يقود لحرب، نتائجها غير محسومة، فبخلاف اسقاط صدام، لم نكن نعرف ما الذي سيبنى تحديدا، ومع الوقت والعنف الطائفي والإرهاب القادم من كل صوب، والأخطاء الكارثية لإدارة التحالف (وبعضها مقصود) وللساسة العراقيين، الديناصورات منهم والقادمين الجدد للساحة، مرت عشر سنوات، وانشغل العالم والإعلام بدول أخرى، ولازال الدم يكسو كل شيء في العراق، حتى هذه الكرة 

عندما كنت اقترب كنت أرى الضحايا في وضع يشير الى أنهم كانوا يحمون شخصا آخر، رضيعا أو طفلا أو زوجة، لكن الجميع فارقوا الحياة.
ولقي الجميع حتفهم في غضون ثانية او ما شابه. وتوفي شيخ كبير وهو يقطع كسرة خبز، وكان اخر مبتسما وبدا انه توفي اثناء ابتسامته.

آخرون ماتوا ببطء وهم يعانون من ألم شديد.

رأيت جثة سيدة في وضع انحناء بالغ وكانت مؤخرة رأسها تلامس قدمها، ورصدت اثار قيء ودماء على ملابسها واثار الالم على وجهها.

في العام الحالي صوت البرلمان العراقي مبدئيا على إعتماد قصيدة للشاعر الراحل محمد مهدي الجواهري كتبها عام 1947 لتصبح مضمونا للنشيد الوطني السادس منذ تأسيس الدولة العراقية:
سلامٌ على هضبات العراق … وشطـّـيه والجُرف والمنحنى

سلامٌ على باسقاتِ النخيل … وشُمِّ الجبال تُشيعُ السَـنا

سلامٌ على نيّرات العصور … ودارِ السلامِ مدارِ الدُنى

سلامُ على خالعِ مِنْ غـَـدٍ … فـَـخاراً على أَمسـِـهِ الدابرِ

سلامٌ على طيباتِ النذور … سلامٌ على الواهبِ الناذرِ
